News Archive » Strike One to the Scots! June 13, 2007 Scuderia Ecosse took first blood at Le Mans tonight, taking the provisional pole position for the 24 hour race. Andrew Kirkaldy’s 4:04.185 banker lap during the first hour of qualifying was never beaten so he secured the top spot in the GT2 class. Rain began to fall down at Mulsanne during the second part of the first session; the pit lane remained dry but it was enough to send everyone scrambling for wet tyres. As the team had already got in a banker lap they sat tight until the conditions settled down. The priority in the second session was for all three Scuderia Ecosse drivers to get in their compulsory three night-time laps, one of the rules at Le Mans. Tim Mullen had a good run before handing over to Chris Niarchos who was the quickest GT2 driver on track during his run, a fantastic achievement for someone on only their second time out at Le Mans. All the teams have the chance to improve tomorrow night during the second and final qualifying session but the Scuderia Ecosse team is in the best possible position from which to fight for the Le Mans pole. Stewart Roden was happy with the performance of his team today: “I’m delighted with the work the guys have done; we achieved what we set out to achieve so I’m happy. We’ll be concentrating on getting the car ready for the race tomorrow. I think Andrew’s time will be hard to beat but let’s see what happens there. All in all, a very good start.” ENDS |
